Environmental Policy

1.Basic policy

Challenge Co., Ltd. designs and manufactures carbon parts for automobiles, racing cars, railway cars, aircraft, medical facilities and air mobility vehicles by such processes as autoclave molding, press molding, and hand layup molding using carbon fiber composite materials. With the awareness that we have an important corporate mission to maintain, improve and hand down the global environment to the next generation, we give careful consideration to the environmental aspects of all our activities as we exercise the technological expertise we have independently cultivated to date as a leader in the industry, embrace new technologies in a positive manner, and aim to increase customer and stakeholder satisfaction.

2.Action policy
(1)

With respect to the quality and environmental aspects of our business, we will comply with all applicable laws and regulations, customer requirements, regional agreements, and environmental operation standards we have voluntarily established for ourselves. Furthermore, we shall place top priority on product safety and quality as our code of behavior.

We will establish and conduct a review of environmental and quality objectives and targets with regard to the following.

This policy shall be disseminated to all employees and also conveyed to all partner companies and suppliers to seek their cooperation.

We shall, as shown below, always act with high sense of ethics and socially-recognized decency in every aspect of our corporate activities by innovative solutions, under a purpose that “we will lead the realization of KAITEKI where people, society and the planet can continue to exist in a comfortable way.

We shall contribute to the realization of KAITEKI through our business with a keen sense of corporate social responsibility, based on the fundamental understanding that the foundation of our corporate activities is society's trust and confidence in us.
<Accountability and Transparency>
We shall, recognizing the importance of accountability in corporate activities, preserve transparency in such activities, disclose information appropriately, and always maintain a stance of openness, both internally and externally.
<Legal Compliance and Fairness, Equitability, and Integrity>
We shall comply with laws and international standards and shall hold ourselves to the highest ethical conduct at all times. In addition, we shall always adopt an attitude of fairness, equitability, and integrity towards customers, business partners, shareholders, government agencies, local communities, and other stakeholders. This attitude shall also apply to our dealings with each other.

We shall respect and communicate closely with all stakeholders including customers, suppliers, shareholders, business partners, government agencies, local communities, and employees, and consider the outcomes of such communication in our corporate activities.
<Respecting Human Rights>
We shall respect the dignity and rights of all people, and shall not discriminate against people unfairly on the basis of race, sex, religion or other protected status. We shall also expect our suppliers and other contractors to refrain from any infringement of human dignity and rights or discriminatory practices.
<Employment and Labor>
We shall not engage in any form of forced, compulsory, or child labor, and shall require our suppliers and other contractors to adhere to the same standards. Challenge Co., Ltd. managers at all levels shall respect human diversity and create working environments where employees can exercise their abilities to the utmost in safe and healthy settings, in order to make optimal use of human resources. Managers shall build sound relations with employees through close dialogue, and shall respect employees' rights, including freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining.
<Environment and Safety>
We shall strive to reduce the environmental impact and protect the environment and ecosystems in our operations, in addition to supplying environmentally friendly products and services. Recognizing that the health and safety of our employees and communities in which we do business form the foundation for the very existence of our company and that we have a corporate social responsibility to ensure the health and safety of others, we shall continue safe business activities.
<Fair Business Practices>
We shall conduct business fairly and sincerely, adhering to ethical principles and refraining from unfair trade practices and any form of bribery or corruption, to contribute to sound social and economic development through fair competition in the market. We shall refuse to work with any group, organization or individual engaged in unlawful activities, and under no circumstances shall we have any relations with anti-social influences.

History

1970
Challenge is founded by Takayoshi Nakamura in Itabashi-ku, Tokyo as a manufacturer of FRP lightweight parts for car racing.
1982
Challenge Co., Ltd. is established.
The company is relocated to Toda City, Saitama where it commences the design and manufacture of racing cars and concept cars.
1991
Mazda 787B, manufactured with the participation of Challenge, wins the Le Mans 24-hour race.
1992
Nissan CP91, manufactured with the participation of Challenge, wins the Daytona 24-hour race.
The development of materials is begun with Mitsubishi Rayon Co., Ltd.
1999
Challenge’s CFRP components are adopted by R34 Skyline GT-R, and mass production is begun.
2006
The Head Office Plant is constructed and relocated to Sayama City, Saitama.
ISO9001 and 14001 certifications are acquired.
2007
Challenge’s CFRP parts are adopted by R35GT-R, and mass production is begun.
2008
Challenge is selected among “300 of Japan’s Vibrant Monozukuri (Manufacturing) SMEs” in recognition of the CFRP processing technology that has been employed in a wide range of sectors.
2010
Challenge receives the “Saitama Challenge Corporate Managers’ Award—Saitama Governor’s Award.
2012
100% of Challenge’s outstanding shares are transferred to Mitsubishi Rayon Co., Ltd. in an M&A deal that was signed in November, making Challenge a consolidated subsidiary of Mitsubishi Rayon.
2013
The ultra-lightweight carbon trunk manufactured by the PCM process is adopted by the R35GT-R 2014 model.
Challenge is certified by Saitama Prefecture as “a company that embraces diverse work styles.”
2017
Challenge’s CFRP components are adopted by R35GT-R nismo, and mass production is begun.
The three chemical companies of Mitsubishi Chemical, Mitsubishi Resin, and Mitsubishi Rayon enter into a business merger and launch Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation.
2018
Plant #2 is constructed in Sayama City, Saitama.
2019
The ultra-lightweight carbon roof manufactured by the PCM process is adopted by the R35GT-R nismo 2020 model.
Challenge is promoted to a Tier 1 supplier of Nissan Motor Corporation.
2020
The ultra-lightweight carbon roof receives the “2020 Nissan Global Supplier Award— Global Innovation Award” from Nissan Motor Corporation.
